Greenhouse is a full service marketing agency with offices in Loughton, Essex. Most of our clients are based in the Essex, Herts, east London and central London areas.
The company was founded in 2003 by Bob Clark after years working in senior, client marketing positions and running a central London communications consultancy. Head of creative services is Colin Metcalfe who was senior creative in several London advertising agencies.
Greenhouse is not your typical marketing agency. You’ll find us down-to-earth and straight talking, we won’t try to baffle you with jargon. We’re not egotistical, creative types who have tantrums if you don’t like our ideas. We believe promoting our clients business is more important that promoting ours. Many of our clients are start-ups and small businesses but we work with larger clients too. For some we are their business partner developing marketing strategy and creating promotional material. For others we are their marketing department.
It’s important to you that every single pound of your marketing budget punches above its weight because you want results from your marketing not just a warm feeling because you’ve got a lovely new brochure!-Bob Clark
When Bob started Greenhouse Marketing the head office was the kitchen table at home but after 30 years commuting into London the 20 seconds travelling to the kitchen and that first cup of tea was so much nicer.
During those 30 years Bob worked in senior positions on both sides of the fence as a client and an agency man. He was Advertising Manager for WH Smith, Marketing Manager at Casio Electronics and Head of Retail Marketing at EMI Records before being headhunted to head up the client services department at Covent Garden marketing consultancy Sears & Nalson. His clients included household names such as Sainsburys, Superdrug, NatWest Bank, National Lottery, Halfords, Woolworths, Ladbrokes, H Samuel and many other blue-chip organisations.
Of the many marketing and advertising campaigns he was responsible for two in particular stick in his mind. One was for the UK launch of the Casio G-Shock watch brand where they ran a series of anarchic magazine advertisements that got him reprimanded by the Advertising Standards Authority. The client was none too happy to begin with but the risk paid off when the associated publicity created around the advertising helped G-Shock exceed its sales targets.
The other memorable campaign was the launch of the celebrity OK Magazine for Richard Desmond’s Northern & Shell publishing house. Richard Desmond, now owner of The Daily Express, Daily Star and Channel 5, had a fearsome reputation that makes Alan Sugar look like Mr Happy. It was Bob’s responsibility to sell the agency’s campaign to him and in a full board meeting, after forcing one senior company director to go and stand in a cupboard, Mr Desmond screamed at Bob to “stop giving me all the f*****g c**p about f*****g cost per thousands and just f*****g tell us what the f**k this is going to do”. But in the end he loved the whole campaign and the first issue of OK was launched on a star-studded Orient Express.
Bob didn’t take any of his existing clients with him to start Greenhouse so it began at client-zero. Over the last few years Greenhouse has been trusted by many wonderful clients both large and small. Our current estimates are that Greenhouse has helped over 30 new companies launch themselves into the world with sparkling new identities, has helped one client grow sales from £60m to £150m, seen several schools grow up nicely and dozens of other clients successfully grow their businesses with the support of Greenhouse’s marketing expertise.
